NEED is a photographic work that focuses on the overconsumption of people due to the effects of the Covid-19 outbreak and the results.
Since the onslaught of Covid-19 in 2019, various parts of the globe have experienced a series of various levels of resource shortages as well as home quarantine orders. This has led to a lot of over-consumption today after the epidemic has subsided a bit. The overconsumption itself has contributed to resource destruction and a degree of resource waste. Many people buy items they may not need, or hoard large quantities of items they think they need. At the same time, there is also consumption that exceeds one's ability or needs - that is, those who consume irrationally and at high rates. Many people tend to exceed the limits of their own affordability, pursuing social recognition through the consumption of various goods.
The over-consumption and production has caused a certain burden on the environment, especially the over-consumption of express packaging exacerbates the pressure on the environment, the United Nations proposed that "the use of resources brought about by our consumption has exceeded the carrying capacity and renewable capacity of the land."
When I realized this, I went to some of the refuse collection points in my neighborhood and the garbage rooms in my apartment building to document some of the overconsumption that is happening around us. I realized that this problem is happening to all of us, even to myself. As Black Friday approaches, items marked "special" are being sold out. And while people are frantically shopping, thrift stores are also receiving a steady stream of almost new items donated by people. I used my camera to record the boxes that people abandoned in the landfill and the items that were thrown away because of excessive hoarding as well as clothes and items that are almost too much to fit in the thrift store and so on.
Before the next consumption, we should think more about whether we really need the item/items?
